Relationship…key to so much in life. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to enjoy family ties, have good friends and continuiing business clients without effective relationship skills.
So what are some good relationship skills?
First is the fundamental quality of Caring. You care what is going on in the other person’s life. You care if they’re happy, sad, upset, excited, etc.
Your caring leads to the quality of Listening. If you don’t listen past their first statement or two, how do you know what’s really going on with them! Most people get to the ‘meat’ of their feelings after talking a bit.
Listening means more than hearing the noise they’re making – their voice – it means hearing what they’re really saying.
Listening means you don’t formulate what you’re going to say to them OR the question you want to ask them until they actually quit talking.
Be cautious about assuming you have their answer. You may end up embarrasing yourself if you’re wrong and shake their confidence in your friendship. After all, it’s proof you’re not really listening!
The third skill is Understanding: does your friend need your input or your ear. Many people just need to be heard. They may not be looking for advice or ideas. They need to be heard.
